A basic definition of a scenic artist (or charge artist, or charge scenic artist, or freaky little person covered in paint) is a person who paints theatrical or film scenery. This entails interpreting the designer's drawings and research and bringing it to life full scale. This goes beyond mere painting and includes sculpture, texturing, dyeing, gilding, carving, plastering, sanding and some sewing. It is a task of creative problem solving to finish a beautiful creation that will, once the show is done, most likely end up in the trash.
